The US Open Tennis tournament, originally known as the US National Championship in 1881, is maintaining one of the oldest tennis traditions in the world. Normally, the tournament is held over a tour week period from the end of August into the first part of September, as is one of the four Grand Slam tennis titles and the last of the tennis season. The tournament has five event championships, including doubles, mixed doubles, singles and junior tournaments. The tournament will be held of the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, located in Queens, New York.
The U.S. Open has some unique aspects that create distinction from the other Grand Slam events, such as allowing the final sets to continue until one of the competing players wins by two games. There are also final-settie breakers. The grounds of the Billie Jean center are composed of DecoTurf, which makes the courts fast and produces less friction and bounce than other hard surfaces. Of course, players must adjust to the surface, just as they have to adjust to the clay courts or grass courts of other events.
The US Open for 2009 is to be held from August 31st through September 13th. The opening night ceremonies have planned special tributes to the humanitarian contributions of athletes. One specific honor will be given to tennis great Andre Agassi, the winner of eight Grand Slam singles events and holder of the record twenty-one consecutive US Open appearances. His foundation has raised almost $75 million to bring opportunities to youth not served enough by the existing educational system. His school, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy graduated it's first senior class in June.
The traditional kick off to the U.S. Open is the annual Arthur Ashe Kids day, and this year's central star is comedian Will Ferrell, who will be joined by Andy Roddick and singer Jordan Sparks to provide a wonderful family event. The day will feature interactive tennis activities in addition to the celebrity appearances and musical performances.
The 2009 U.S. Open will feature several highly anticipated matches and expectations. Recent Wimbledon winner Roger Federer won by besting Andy Roddick and fans are eager to see if Roddick will be able to rally and keep Federer from getting his sixteenth grand slam win. Serena Williams is the defending women' champion and has been playing extremely well.
Tickets are sold in packages or by session, in which a session is either a single day's morning matches or a single evenings matches. The kid's day tickets are sold separately. The tournament will also have heavy television coverage on ESPN.
