Golf is a Good Form of Exercise

Most people know that you must exercise to keep in good physical health, yet countless people simply have no desire to exercise. You may hear that the reasons are often that they have no time to exercise or it is impossible to find an exercise program that interests them and not bores them. On the other hand, there are also people that are conscious of the growing problem with an overweight and obese population and they want to do some exercises.

The problem for many is that they don't want to just exercise in order to get fit. So they look for ideas about a sport to begin to get into shape, but if you are middle aged or a senior, you can't be thinking about taking up triathlons or rugby. Golf, though, is a sport that is suitable for those both male or female, and young or old.

Taking up the Sport of Golf to Get Fit

Golf, as a sport, is quite easy to get into in the sense that you do not have to train for months to start - like a triathlon. Once you have been playing golf for a while, you will find that it is greatly enjoyable and fun. This is the missing key to actually getting up and doing some exercise, because if you enjoy what you are doing, you will be surprised at how often you look for reasons to play. This is why golf has become a sport that provides numerous previously inactive people with a good pretext to get up and get started with some exercise.

At the Start

From the outset it is better to start playing shorter rounds of golf, like 9-hole courses, until you can improve your general physical abilities to permit you to be capable of handling the physical requirements for a full golf course. Because we are discussing golf as a sport, we need to discard the use of golf carts because this takes away the benefits of golf to get in shape. This means that it is required to have the physical strength to be able to walk the entire golf course before you can think about playing a round of golf. You may discover that for your first rounds you can only play a few of the holes. This may seem discouraging but by always playing, you will manage to develop your stamina and strength to permit you to walk and golf all of the holes.

Developing Your Fitness Level

Generally, golf is quite a good sport for allowing you to slowly get started with an exercise schedule. When you first start golf you will be taking golf lessons which will allow you to start off slowly by concentrating on your swing. You will start to develop your golf muscles and your flexibility at the same time you work on your golf swing.

Even if some people tell you that you can play golf when you are overweight and unfit, this is not accurate. True, you could get around the course in a golf cart and get out to take a rigid swing to move the ball along the fairway a little distance at a time, but this is not golf. If you are even just a little bit interested in improving your health and fitness through golfing, you will want to in the end play golf skilfully. Once you can start scoring low and get competitive, you will look forward to working on your fitness and flexibility so that you can get improve even more.

If you love playing golf then you will not be bothered about getting up early to go to the course. If you want to take your game to a higher level, you will not mind the little bit of effort to do some exercising to work on your golf muscles and a flexibility program to develop your limberness. Once you are hooked on golf you will find that because you want to improve your golf swing you will furthermore be working on getting fit for golf and staying fit.
