The Marketing Techniques Used for PC Games

By Edward Elric

There are many techniques that are used for computer game promotion. We can all recognize one technique by just turning on the television. Whenever a game comes up, they never say the price at the beginning; first, they list all the benefits of owning the game, and then hit you with the price.

Why do marketers take this route when promoting games? The justification is that viewers need to be focused on what the game is about, rather than what it is priced at; that can be worried about later. Since advertising is so expensive, businesses want it to be as effective as possible.

Although the price announcement is delayed in advertisements, it is usually not foregone altogether. Giving the price at the end can be the final move that fully convinces a viewer to make the purchase. However, if the price is too high, then there is no chance of success, which is why a price must be carefully decided on.

Some computer games are so fun and addicting that players become obsessed. This phenomenon can happen with any game (or any general stimulus in the world), but it most often occurs with RPG games, based on their inherent nature.

In order to create an addicting game, which is what designers ultimately want to do, there has to be a lot of planning and thought. It is not easy to fully grab someone's attention, especially for a very long period of time. Therefore, the game designers and writers have to rigorously test their products to make sure they are playable on the long-term.

One of the most addicting games out there is World of Warcraft. This MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) has been around for many years and has roots in single-player games.

There are many features in World of Warcraft that engross people to such a high level. For one, there are hundreds of upgrades, power-ups, items, and missions to attain/complete, and this wide assortment creates competition within the community.

With any game, it is important to recognize limits. This is because, as humans, we need a fair amount of exercise, and computer gaming takes away from that. Also, we need to devote time to other things, both for our personal growth and the well being of society.
